PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Google is taking steps toward bringing its high-speed Internet service to Portland.

The Oregonian reports (https://bit.ly/1RRIxEt ) that the company has begun the formal application to put its networking equipment in the city. It’s the latest in a series of moves that imply the company intends to install its hyperfast Google Fiber service. It has started hiring a local staff, won tax breaks and met with Portland land-use planners.

The company has also contacted at least two neighborhood associations to express interest in serving their communities.

Still, nothing is certain until Google Fiber formally announces its intent. A 2014 Oregon Supreme Court ruling nearly derailed the project, and future events could also disrupt Google’s plans.
