LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Las Cruces police say a man has been arrested after a plumber was shot while working on the sink in the man’s apartment.

Police say the 54-year-old plumber remains hospitalized for treatment of an abdomen wound that is not believed to be life-threatening.

Circumstances of what led up to the shooting aren’t known but police say investigators believe 69-year-old John T. Haynie was intoxicated at the time of the shooting Thursday night.

Police say the plumber left the apartment after being shot, got into his van and called 911.

Haynie surrendered after a two-hour standoff with police.

Police spokesman Dan Trujillo says Hayne is jailed on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder.

Trujillo says he doesn’t know whether Haynie has a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
