MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) - State officials are trying to determine who owns a charcoal kiln that recently collapsed in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
The Mining Journal of Marquette reports (https://bit.ly/1Uy4zzB ) Friday that the Michigan Department of Transportation owns the right of way where the Carp River kiln is located.
The kiln fell apart earlier this week. It was used to burn local hardwoods into charcoal for the Carp River blast furnace.
Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman Dan Weingarten says signs and scaffolding at the site indicate that the structure is maintained as a place of historical significance.
The damage to the kiln hasn’t affected traffic on U.S. 41.
