CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - A high school in western Maryland is getting pest-control treatment after a student killed a poisonous black widow spider in the girls’ locker room.
Allegany County Public Schools spokeswoman Mia Cross says the spider was killed Thursday at Allegany High School in Cumberland. She says a pest-control company confirmed a school administrator’s identification of the spider.
Cross said Friday that no other live spiders were found. But she says the gymnasium and locker rooms have been closed and will be treated this weekend.
Cross says the entire school will be closed all weekend. She says no weekend student activities are affected.
Black widows are shiny black spiders with a bright red hourglass marking on the underside of their abdomens. The spider’s bite can cause difficulty breathing, muscle cramps and nausea.
