ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) - The Aberdeen Mall appears to be moving closer to getting a new anchor store.

A city employee tells the Aberdeen American News (https://bit.ly/1VBq3KT ) that the $1.7 billion building permit reads “renovate tenant space in Kohl’s department store.” Planning and zoning administrative assistant Paula Nelson says the permit approved to mall owners Rockstep Capital was recently picked up from the city office.

Officials with Kohl’s and the mall have not made any announcements on a new tenant for the space formerly occupied by J.C. Penney.

A banner on the chain link fence notes the contractor as Missouri-based Crane Construction. The website for Crane Construction says the company has completed more than 27 new Kohl’s stores since 2004.
