ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - A man killed with an ax in Orlando was among former students who alleged abuse at a now-shuttered reform school in Florida’s Panhandle.

According to an Orange County Sheriff’s Office report, John Stubbs died Friday after Joseph Robinson struck him with ax during an altercation.

Robinson, 48, was held without bail Sunday on a first-degree murder charge. Jail records didn’t show whether he had an attorney.

Stubbs, 69, was among hundreds former students of the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys in Marianna who accused its employees and guards of physical and sexual abuse.

The president of an organization representing those students tells the Orlando Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1Sq6Vu4 ) that Stubbs was a “passive, quiet and controlled individual.”

Stubbs’ granddaughter says the trauma made it hard for him to trust others, but he was a loving family man with 10 children.
