GALLMAN, Miss. (AP) - A man who escaped from the Copiah County jail nearly a decade ago is back behind bars there.

WLBT-TV (https://bit.ly/1Vgb0HG ) reports Sidney Robert Benner was recaptured after investigators learned he was living in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Benner climbed over a jail fence and ran in 2007 a month after he was arrested for trying to run over a highway patrol officer who stopped him for driving recklessly.

Copiah County Sheriff Harold Jones says efforts to recapture Benner were frustrated after he fell off the county’s wanted list. That means when Benner was living in Texas and Utah, police didn’t notify Mississippi authorities when Benner was arrested.

Benner faces charges that include felony evasion and aggravated assault on a police officer.

He waived his indictment and will return to court in May.
