PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police say a suspect who tried to rob an elderly citizen on a north Philadelphia street fired a shot at an off-duty police officer who intervened before the officer shot and killed him.
A police spokesman says the off-duty officer saw a man with a handgun robbing the victim at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Police said the officer identified himself and ordered the suspect to drop his weapon, but he pointed it at the officer, who fired.
The man then fled and the officer chased him. During the pursuit, police said, the man pointed his gun at the officer again and fired, and the officer returned fire.
The suspect eventually collapsed and later was pronounced dead at Einstein Medical Center. The police homicide and internal affairs departments are investigating.
