MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife says applications for moose hunting permits for this fall’s season are now available online.

Printed applications for the permit lottery will be available next month.

The state is planning to issue 135 regular moose season permits and 25 archery permits. The regular moose hunting season will be Oct. 15-20, and the archery season Oct. 1-7. The permits will be for bulls only in most of Vermont.

The total number of permits being issued is down 40 percent from last year.

Vermont moose biologist Cedric Alexander says the reduction in permit numbers is intended to allow the moose population to grow in most of the state.

Lottery applications are $10 for residents and $25 for nonresidents. The deadline is June 15.
