CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - Cranston’s Edgewood Yacht Club has broken ground on a new clubhouse to replace the one devastated by a fire five years ago.
The yacht club’s original clubhouse was built in 1908, but it was destroyed during a blizzard in January 2011 when the building caught fire after it was struck by lightning.
WPRI-TV reports the new $4 million clubhouse will be about half the size of the old structure, but it will feature more modern amenities while still preserving historic elements.
In addition to being more energy efficient, the clubhouse will also be outfitted with sprinklers, which the old building didn’t have.
Brown University is assisting with construction because the school’s sailing team will be headquartered at the clubhouse.
Work is expected to be completed by next May.
