LINCOLN, N.H. (AP) - Officials are waiting until early next year to decide whether to replace a hiking bridge over the North Fork of the Pemigewasset River that was damaged during Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.
U.S. Forest Service officials tell New Hampshire Public Radio (https://bit.ly/1SbruRb ) a study is underway that explores the issues surrounding removing or replacing the 60-foot-long Thoreau Falls Bridge.
The 1962 bridge is part of the 5.1-mile Thoreau Falls Trail in the Pemigewasset Wilderness area in the White Mountain National Forest.
Officials deemed it unsafe in 2011 due to a combination of age and storm damage.
Two reports are expected to be released this year, along with a draft decision. That will be followed by a comment period, which will help officials decide whether to make the draft decision final.
