DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) - Nearly a month after a fire damaged a dormitory at Loras College, some displaced students continue living in other spots on campus and uncertainty remains about what will happen to the damaged structure.

The Telegraph-Herald (https://bit.ly/1TMc6dl ) reports that 45 residents were displaced from Visitation complex after an apparent lightning strike sparked the fire March 16.

Seventeen students who lived in the south building were able to return to their living quarters within 10 days. Another nine students who lived in the north complex were able to move to an unused floor in the south building. The remaining 18 students have been relocated to a variety of campus apartment buildings and residence halls.

The assistant dean of students, Molly Burrows Schumacher, said that there is a special community in the building, which has smaller-sized floors than the other residence halls.

“They eat together, spend time together, they become very, very close,” she said. “So for a lot of the students, after the fire, it was like being separated from their family.”

Student Kayla Barnes was among the students displaced.

“It has definitely been a challenge,” Barnes said. “It was something we had to take one step at a time. But at this point we are pretty far along in the process and we’re starting to get settled. We have adjusted.”

Burrows Schumacher officials haven’t decided how to repair the damage as it has been exacerbated as snow has collapsed portions of the roof and high winds have caught debris.

“We are still working with adjusters and engineers to see what we need to do to make the building operational and functional for us,” she said.
