PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine will meet this week with President Barack Obama’s nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court.

King will have a one-on-one meeting with Merrick Garland on Wednesday in Washington.

Maine’s senior senator, Republican Susan Collins, met with Garland last week.

Both of Maine’s senators want the Senate to follow the normal process that includes a Judiciary Committee hearing on Garland’s qualifications.

The Senate’s Republican leadership is balking at hearings and wants to hold off on approving a nominee until after a new president is elected in November.
