AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A bill that gives Maine’s county and regional jails a one-time funding boost of $2.4 million is gaining support in the Legislature.

The House on Monday voted 102-44 to pass the bill, which the Senate had passed last Friday in an initial vote.

Lawmakers say an anticipated increase in federal matching funds for the state’s Mainecare program will free up money to fund the bill. However, the bill only gives the jails additional money for the fiscal year that begins on July 1.

The bill faces further action in the House and Senate.
