TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) - A motorcyclist was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries over the weekend following a collision with a sport utility vehicle in Torrington.

Police say the accident occurred around 4:05 p.m. Sunday when the motorcycle struck the driver’s side rear door of a Ford Escape attempting to pull out of Birden Street onto Highland Avenue.

Both vehicles suffered extensive damage in the crash and were towed from the scene.

The motorcyclist, who was not identified, was airlifted to Hartford Hospital. Police spokesman Kevin Tieman says the man was reportedly not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

The driver of the Ford and a passenger were treated at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital before being released.

An investigation is ongoing.
