MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont this week is set to observe Equal Pay Day, highlighting the continuing push for pay equity for women.

The Vermont Commission on Women says the pay gap between men and women in Vermont is 16 percent, with men making an average of $42,000 and women about $37,000.

On Tuesday at the Statehouse, women will dress in red, to symbolize being in the red, to bring attention to the issue of pay equity. Democratic Gov. Peter Shumlin plans to sign a proclamation supporting the cause.
