NEW ROADS, La. (AP) - Pointe Coupee Parish voters have defeated a property tax proposal that would have provided public school teachers with $5,000 raises.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1TM7eEP) the school board’s proposal would have generated an additional $4.5 million annually.

The Secretary of State’s office reported that unofficial turnout was about 26 percent. Voters overwhelmingly rejected the proposal, with 57 percent of the 4,068 voters who cast ballots voting against the tax proposal.
