LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles police say officers fatally shot a burglary suspect as he held an elderly man at knifepoint.

Officer Norma Eisenman tells City News Service the incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. in a Boyle Heights apartment.

Eisenman says officers responding to a report of a burglary in progress entered the apartment, saw the man being held at knifepoint and fired, hitting the suspect.

The suspect died at the scene.

Coroner’s Lt. Larry Dietz says the dead man was in his mid-to-late 20s.
