HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A 21-year-old Hartford man is now facing a murder charge in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old woman whose death was initially reported as a suicide.

Police say Torrick Maragh shot Nasashalie Hoy in a basement bedroom of a Broad Street home Jan. 5.

Maragh told police Hoy killed herself with his 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun after the two argued and had a physical altercation.

Maragh was arrested on a gun charge and has been held in lieu of $1 million bond that’s now been increased to $1.5 million.

Police say Maragh will be served a warrant charging him with murder at his next court appearance on May 9.

Maragh’s lawyer Steven Slattery told the Hartford Courant his client maintains Hoy shot herself and that he cared for her “very deeply.”
