WALDORF, Md. (AP) - The Charles County Sheriff’s Office says a 10-year-old who was hit by a car while riding his bike in Waldorf has died.

The department said in a news release that James Elek Maples died Tuesday. He had been taken to Children’s National Medical Center in Washington after the crash on Sunday.

Authorities say the driver of the vehicle struck Maples as he crossed the street on his bike in a designated crosswalk. The boy was wearing a helmet and was in the company of his mother and friends.

Deputies say the driver remained at the scene. The crash is still under investigation.
