MONTEBELLO, Calif. (AP) - A former Montebello police officer who allegedly slammed a suspect’s head against the pavement has been charged with assault under color of authority.

Thirty-seven-year-old Mark Ryan was charged last week and surrendered Wednesday morning. He’s free on bond and faces up to three years in prison if convicted.

An email seeking comment from Ryan wasn’t immediately returned.

A restaurant security camera allegedly caught Ryan slamming the head of a suspected graffiti tagger on the pavement on Halloween two years ago.

Ryan spent 13 years with the Montebello Police Department. The San Gabriel Valley Tribune (https://bit.ly/22v9ikX ) says he retired early this year.

He’s now a real estate agent.
