BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Applications are being accepted for scholarships to the North Dakota University System’s Bakken U program.

The initiative was founded last year to help keep people in the energy industry from leaving the state when times are tough. The program is open to oil workers, former oil workers and their spouses.

More than $20,000 in scholarship money is available for the fall 2016 semester, including one four-year scholarship at Dickinson State University worth more than $9,000. Williston State is offering five $1,000 scholarships and Minot State is giving out two $1,000 scholarships. The North Dakota Petroleum Council is sponsoring a $5,000 scholarship.

Applications are due by June 15.

Chancellor Mark Hagerott says oil field veterans are hard workers and scholarships to Bakken U should make them more marketable for other jobs.
