PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) - A Prescott couple has been arrested for allegedly spending months squatting in a bank-owned home once listed for sale at $900,000.

Prescott police say 37-year-old Randall Skates and 45-year-old Jennifer Skates ascribe to a set of beliefs known as the Sovereign Citizens Movement.

They say the couple believes the unoccupied house is theirs because banks are not people and have no right to own property.

The property had been foreclosed on and unoccupied since late 2015.

Police say the couple filed a deed for the house, but it didn’t give them legal ownership to the property.

The two were arrested Tuesday and booked into the Yavapai County Jail on suspicion of burglary, theft and criminal trespass.

It was unclear Wednesday if the couple has an attorney for their case.
