BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) - A man and a woman accused of killing their 3-year-old foster daughter and then fleeing to Mexico have each been convicted of second-degree murder in Kern County.

KBAK-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1ScixDZ) Alberto Garcia and Carla Garcia will be sentenced in May. Carla Garcia’s attorney said he will appeal Wednesday’s conviction.

They were both charged in the 2010 death of Serenity Gandara, their niece who they were raising as a foster child. The girl was found dead at the couple’s Bakersfield home.

An autopsy determined Serenity died from massive blunt force trauma to her abdomen.

Authorities say the couple fled the country after the girl’s death. They were arrested in 2012.
