GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - The late former first lady Betty Ford’s birthday has been commemorated at a luncheon.

The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation’s “America’s First Ladies: An Enduring Legacy” luncheon was held Wednesday at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

The Grand Rapids Press (https://bit.ly/1YuJUL0 ) reports journalist Cokie Roberts told people assembled to commemorate Betty Ford’s birthday that she took on her role with “grace and style and verve.” Roberts said Betty Ford “came in at an incredibly tough time for the nation and for her husband,” with Gerald R. Ford succeeding Richard Nixon as president.

Betty Ford, whose birthday is April 8, died in 2011.
