BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a northern New York man has been charged with failing to pay taxes on hundreds of thousands of cigarettes he was transporting in a truck pulled over by police near Buffalo.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Buffalo says 43-year-old Ian Tarbell of Hogansburg, on the Canadian border in Franklin County, faces several charges, including possession of contraband cigarettes and evading the payment of a tax.

Prosecutors say Tarbell was arrested Feb. 16 after Genesee County sheriff’s deputies stopped the truck he was driving in Pembroke, 25 miles east of Buffalo.

Officials say the truck was pulling a trailer containing more than 900,000 untaxed and unstamped cigarettes.

Tarbell was released on $100,000 bond after appearing in federal court Wednesday. It couldn’t be determined if he has a lawyer.
