CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The acting head of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Wyoming State Office has been named full-time state director.

Mary Jo Rugwell served as acting state director since January 2015. She was associate state director for more than two years before that.

BLM Director Neil Kornze announced Rugwell’s promotion to Wyoming state director Thursday.

Rugwell is a Cheyenne native who also has worked for the BLM in Nevada and New Mexico. In Wyoming, the federal agency oversees more than 27,000 square miles of public land.

Previous Wyoming State Director Don Simpson retired in 2015 after 39 years with BLM.
