BENTON, Ark. (AP) - A Saline County Sheriff’s detective has been fired after an internal investigation into an auto accident that occurred while he was driving his sheriff’s office vehicle.
A news release from the sheriff’s office Thursday says Christopher Maher was fired after the investigation found he violated the department’s vehicle policies.
Maher crashed his sheriff’s office vehicle into a tree late last month. After driving away, he allegedly returned in an attempt to find the location of the accident and became stuck in a ditch.
Maher tested negative for alcohol on his breath, but Bryant Police officers responding to the accident gave Maher several field sobriety tests before arresting him on preliminary charges of driving while impaired and careless and prohibited driving.
Maher has said he was taking prescription medications.
