BOSTON (AP) - State labor officials say Massachusetts continued to add jobs in March while the state’s unemployment rate ticked down to 4.4 percent.

Preliminary job estimates from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics show the state gained about 6,900 jobs last month and there are nearly 26,000 fewer unemployed persons in Massachusetts than a year ago.

The March jobless rate of 4.4 percent was down from a nearly 15-year low of 4.5 percent in February. Massachusetts is now more than a half point below the U.S. unemployment rate, which stood at 5 percent in March.

Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Ronald Walker says job growth is continuing across the state’s strongest economic sectors.
