FREMONT, Neb. (AP) - Supporters have weighed in on the benefits of a proposed chicken plant that would be built between Fremont and Nickerson in Dodge County.
Critics have dominated meetings in Fremont and Nickerson where the issue arose. Not so at Wednesday’s Dodge County Board of Supervisors meeting, at which people on both sides shared their views with the board.
Opponents echoed several concerns raised at prior meetings, including the plant’s potential impact on local school systems and on the environment. The Greater Fremont Development Council has said the plant would bring more than 1,100 jobs to the area.
But Fremont resident Kathy Rhea, who owns a cattle-feeding business, said recruiting an agriculture business is more sensible than wishing a high-tech company would choose Dodge County for a development.
