RENO, Nev. (AP) - Casinos in Washoe County have dodged a bill for back taxes totaling nearly $5 million.

A recent audit discovered the county has been significantly miscalculating a portion of the gambling taxes levied on local casinos over the past seven years.

The Washoe County Commission voted unanimously on Wednesday to bill the casinos the correct amount beginning this year - about $995,000.

But the Reno Gazette-Journal (https://tinyurl.com/zzr7tag) reports the panel agreed with their staff’s recommendation that it would be too complicated to try to collect all the back taxes at this point.

Among other things, they’d have to sort through changes in ownership at some casinos, and in some cases more than once over that period of seven years.
