FORT GAY, W.Va. (AP) - Authorities have arrested a Wayne County man after a tip led to a raid of a suspected cockfighting operation.

Media outlets report 30-year-old Dustin Lee Smith of Fort Gay was charged Tuesday with felony drug possession and 10 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

According to a statement from the Humane Society of the United States, investigators found 131 live birds and three dead birds at a Fort Gay property. Also found were knives, cockfighting trophies and materials such as metal spurs.

Child Protective Services was also called after two young children were found on the property.

Last month Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin approved a bill that passed the Legislature which upgrades penalties for attending an animal fight and increases offenses for gambling on or taking children to such fights.
