BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Two young girls have been rescued after a roof collapsed while they were visiting their grandparents in Birmingham.

Birmingham police Lt. Sean Edwards tells media outlets that the 5-year-old and 8-year-old girls are expected to recover, despite having suffered serious injuries upon being trapped among the rubble on Thursday afternoon.

Fire Chief Brady Johnson says first responders rescued the girls within about 10 minutes by removing the debris, brick by brick.

Sgt. Frank Alexander says the girls were both responsive when they left for the hospital.

The cause of the collapse is still under investigation.
