WASHINGTON (AP) - A Vietnam War veteran from the Hudson Valley has been awarded the Silver Star 48 years after rescuing three wounded paratroopers while under heavy fire.

Stanley DeRuggiero, Jr. was awarded the Silver Star on Thursday by Rep. Chris Gibson during a ceremony on Capitol Hill.

DeRuggiero was with the Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade in 1968 when he rescued the three badly wounded paratroopers in Vietnam. He fought off several enemy attacks as he guarded the wounded paratroopers, who were eventually dragged to safety.

He had already received the Bronze Star, but his former company commander petitioned the military to upgrade the award to the Silver Star.

DeRuggiero is a retired carpenter who lives in Austerlitz in Columbia County.
