SALEM, Ore. (AP) - Data from the Oregon Legislative Fiscal Office shows the average state employee in 2015 earns $56,028 annually.
The Statesman Journal reports (https://is.gd/YMvn9A ) that according the report released Thursday the average cost per state employee including benefits last year was $89,000. Employee compensation is 10 percent of the total state budget.
State employment is growing, with 89,000 employees in March, a 10 percent rise since March 2011.
Employment Department economist Nick Beleiciks says the public average is higher than the average salary of private sector employees, which was just under $45,900 in 2015.
A report from the Employment Department shows that the broader range of jobs in the private sector can account for the disparity, with the private sector’s average pulled down by low-paying jobs generally not in government like leisure and hospitality.
