BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Police in Burlington are investigating two overdose deaths that occurred over a three-week span in the northwest Vermont city.

The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1W1MUj9 ) Mayor Miro Weinberger said the two fatalities, which happened on Thursday and March 22, are evidence of both the city’s opiate epidemic and “the urgent need to continue to expand our response.”

The latest death occurred around 7:30 a.m. Thursday after attempts made by first responders to revive the 28-year-old victim were unsuccessful. Investigators say the man ingested heroin before he was found unresponsive at his Luck Street home.

Police are still awaiting toxicology results for a 50-year-old woman, who was found dead in her North Street apartment on March 22. Investigators say evidence suggests that she may have been using heroin before her death.
