FREMONT, Neb. (AP) - Officials have announced that Costco Wholesale Corp. is the company behind the proposed chicken plant in Dodge County.

The company had been pursuing the plan under a cloak of confidentiality, which raised some residents’ concerns. But the Greater Fremont Development Council sent a news release Thursday evening that confirmed what some local officials already knew.

Opponents have raised several issues, including the plant’s potential impact on schools and the environment. The council says the plant would create 1,100 new jobs and provide other financial benefits to the community.

The current site under consideration sits between Fremont and Nickerson. A Costco executive, Jeff Lyons, told the Fremont Tribune that although eastern Nebraska is Costco’s first choice, the company will continue to look at alternate locations. He wouldn’t name them.
