LEWISTON, Maine (AP) - Police were able to peacefully resolve an armed standoff that was sparked by a Lewiston man’s threats to take his own life at his home.

The Sun Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1MxrNDE ) officers responded to the Ridgewood Avenue home around 7:20 p.m. Thursday after the man’s wife reported that he was held up in their garage with a gun.

A perimeter was set up by police near the intersection of Ridgewood and Sabattus streets.

The man’s wife safely left the home by 7:30 p.m. as officers armed with rifles positioned themselves on a neighbor’s roof.

After just over an hour, the man was taken into custody without incident after he attempted to leave the garage and get back into his home.

The man was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
