AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Austin police say an 18-year-old man has been charged in the shooting of a tactical officer who was serving a search warrant.

Police Chief Art Acevedo (ah-seh-VAY’-doh) said Tyler Michael Harrell has been charged with attempted capital murder. It was not immediately clear if Harrell has an attorney.

Acevedo said that officers were serving a search warrant related to an investigation into narcotics trafficking and sales early Thursday, when James Pittman, seven-year police veteran, was shot in the knee.

Acevedo said another officer returned fire, but Harrell, who eventually surrendered, was not struck.

Police say Pittman suffered injuries not believed to be life-threatening and is in stable condition at an Austin hospital.
