NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Marrero woman has been sentenced in federal court to a year in prison for taking federal grant money to elevate her house - but using the money for personal expenses.

U.S. Attorney Kenneth Polite (poh-LEET’) said in a news release that 43-year-old Cindy Dandridge was sentenced Thursday. The release said Dandridge had earlier pleaded guilty to a single count of theft of government funds.

Prosecutors said Dandridge received $50,000 in 2011 from the Home Elevation Mitigation Grant Program but never used the money to raise her home.

Polite said Dandridge was sentenced to a year and a day in prison and was ordered to pay $50,000 in restitution.
