NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Regional Transit Authority in New Orleans is getting $5 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration to help improve passenger ferry services.

The RTA will use the funds to replace its 90-year-old terminal, located between the Central Business District and the French Quarter. Officials say the move is planned to increase the efficiency of the transportation system and support ongoing development efforts.

Federal officials said Thursday in a news release that the department will provide grants to 17 other projects in nine other states including $713,280 to rehabilitate three vessels in the Chatham Area Transit Authority in Chatham, Georgia, and $4 million to the San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority to expand capacity at its main ferry terminal.
