PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - A Portsmouth woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for killing her 18-month-old daughter.

The Virginian-Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/23ACP2y ) a judge sentenced 22-year-old Joy Brown last week to 30 years in prison but suspended half the sentence. Brown pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder in the death of her child.

Authorities say Brown admitted to beating her daughter twice in April 2015. Detectives say Brown told them that she was angry with the child’s father, and the child looked like her father.

The girl was taken to a hospital April 18, where she died two days later. The cause of death was abusive head trauma.

Brown was initially charged with first-degree murder. Under a plea agreement, she was allowed to plead guilty to the lesser charge.
