MONESSEN, Pa. (AP) - The company that publishes the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has sold the former Valley Independent newspaper to a group of businessmen who plan to relaunch the paper with a new name.

Trib Total Media announced Friday that it has sold the Monessen-based paper to Mid Mon Valley Publishing Co. That group was formed by Charleroi attorney Keith Bassi and other investors specifically to buy the Valley Independent’s assets. The group plans to re-launch the paper as the Mon Valley Independent later this year.

Trib Total Media closed the Monessen paper and The Daily News in McKeesport after failing to find buyers for each by Dec. 31.

Trib Total Media sold some other western Pennsylvania daily and weekly newspapers last year and now publishes three regional editions of its flagship newspaper, the Tribune-Review.
