GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - Gulfport’s West Harrison High School band has been selected to perform in the 2017 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The performance, announced Thursday, will mark the first parade appearance by the school’s band. Organizers say the band will join the parade to the tune of “Let’s Have a Parade,” the iconic phrase that has signaled the start of every parade since 1924.

West Harrison was selected from 175 applicants as one of 10 bands to march in the holiday event held in New York City.

Band director Tim Garrett says the selection is a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students.” He says they’re honored to represent the school, the Harrison County School District and the state as just the fourth school from the state to ever march in the Macy’s parade.
