ELBA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Police say infant car seats prevented two children from suffering serious injuries after the car they were in overturned in Lapeer County’s Elba Township.

The county sheriff’s office says the two-year-old and eight-month-old were strapped inside their car seats and upside down early Saturday morning when a sergeant crawled inside the car and pulled them out.

The 34-year-old male driver and 32-year-old female passenger, both from Grand Blanc, were seriously injured.

Their car struck a guardrail about 1:30 a.m. Saturday. The car then entered a ditch, hit a utility pole and went airborne before landing on its roof. Smoke was coming from the car when deputies arrived.

It was snowing at the time and authorities are looking into weather conditions and alcohol as possible factors in the crash.
