ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Members of the New York National Guard are heading to South Africa to share their expertise in disaster preparedness planning.

National Guard officials say the three-person team - two Army Guard soldiers and an Air Guard member - are traveling to Pretoria this weekend to participate in a disaster preparedness planning conference with members of the South African military.

The New Yorkers are veterans of the state National Guard’s response to Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The trio has been involved in planning annual exercises for the National Guard and local first responders across the state.

New York state has had a partnership with the Republic of South Africa since 2003 and exchanges military visitors that nation.

A South African military delegate is expected to visit New York in June.
