MIAMI (AP) - A former Miami police officer has been sentenced to 3 ½ years in prison for providing protection to a cocaine dealer.

The Miami Herald (https://goo.gl/ADBtKJ) reports that 37-year-old Jose Maldonado-Dick was sentenced Friday. He pleaded guilty last month to attempted cocaine trafficking, official misconduct and unlawful compensation. He was previously fired from the police department.

Authorities say Maldonado-Dick accepted $1,900 in the fall of 2014 to provide security for what he thought was a cocaine dealer. The man was actually an informant working with public corruption investigators.

Under the terms of a plea agreement, Maldonado-Dick can never work as a police officer again.
