AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine’s state government will look for ways to reduce the impact of marine debris on coastal workers.
The state Legislature will direct several departments to consider ways to mitigate the problem of marine debris, such as plastic waste, due to the passage of a new law.
Bill sponsor Mick Devin, a Newcastle Democrat, says the law is about protecting the coastline for future generations of visitors and workers. The bill became law on Wednesday.
Maine Lobstermen’s Association executive director Patrice McCarron says marine debris is a growing problem for her industry. The debris also threatens marine life and commercial fisheries.
