PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) - A man will spend up to 18 years in prison in the death of his friend who was stabbed in the heart in late January.
The Kitsap Sun reports (https://bit.ly/1N2aEN2) 32-year-old Dustin Cupp pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He said in court that he wanted to take responsibility quickly to spare the family.
Investigators found Cupp smoked methamphetamine before going to see 32-year-old Travis Fish. Prosecutors said Cupp misperceived a threat from his friend and stabbed him in the chest rather than leave the area.
The judge granted the prosecution’s request for a sentence of 215 months out of the maximum 265 he could have received.
Public defender Kevin Anderson said the case shows the awful effect of methamphetamine on the human brain.
