JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A Jacksonville man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for his infant son’s death.
The Florida Times-Union (https://goo.gl/XCMhA4) reports that 36-year-old Donald James Crystalus was sentenced Friday. He pleaded guilty in February to second-degree murder and faced a possible life sentence.
Authorities say Crystalus was caring for 4-month-old Gabriel and his 2-year-old brother while his wife was working in October 2014. The child was taken to a Jacksonville hospital. Officers were called to the hospital after health officials said the baby’s injuries couldn’t have occurred accidentally.
Crystalus told police the child slipped while bathing.
The child died two days later. Crystalus was arrested a few weeks later.
Police at the time said the child died of “intentional, severe physical abuse.”
